Even if you’re not currently experiencing back pain, having back support can help prevent back pain from occurring when used in anticipation of strenuous activity. Certain back supports can help ensure safe lifting in jobs like construction or moving so each motion is ergonomic and healthy. Keep your back in tip-top shape by using a back brace or other form of back support to take the stress off of it.
The ComfiLife lower lumbar pillow with memory foam is available in a soft gray color and has 3D mesh that covers your back area for keeping you cool. The pillow has a strap to adjust to your chair or vehicle seat.
I love the ERGO21 large! It fits my chair at work perfectly. I work 8 hours a day at an office job so I am at the computer a lot. This cushion helps with back pain, and helps me sit up in the correct posture. I’m so grateful that I won this in the giveaway!
You may not realize it but pain in your neck may be related to a lack of lumbar support in your office chair. Alignment of the head and spine relates to neck pain; if your spine is suffering due to lack of lumbar support, you may also experience pain in your neck.
Along with chairs, there are cushions and pillows that help to provide lumbar support. Like the office chairs, these types of devices help to minimize or alleviate stress on the muscles of the lower back and prevent a great deal of pain. One advantage to pillows and cushions providing lumbar support is they are portable. The pillows can be taken along and help with back pain in any situation where the individual will be in a seated position for an extended period of time. The cushions work well for people driving long distances, or passengers on a train or plane. They are even helpful when attending a sporting event where the primary seating is wooden or concrete bleachers.
The roll shape gives the cushion much smaller dimensions than the large, flat cushions we have seen thus far meaning it is far easier to carry around. The single strap works sufficiently well given the small dimensions and allows you to even fasten it around your waist. This means you can wear it and remove the hassle attaching and detaching it from chairs if you need to move around.
No specific back exercises were found that improved pain or increased functional ability in people with acute back pain. Exercise, however, may be useful for people with chronic back pain to help them return to normal activities and work. These exercises usually involve stretching maneuvers.
It began like many other spring mornings on my leafy college campus. Birds were singing outside the dormitory windows, and the sun was shining. As I started to sit up, however, panic hit me: I couldn’t get out of bed. Any effort to prop myself up on my elbows or shift my feet and legs met with waves of pain that rolled up my body.
What’s more, medications touted to provide back pain relief are saddled with severe side effects. For example, NSAIDs, one of the most commonly prescribed drugs on the market, not only put you at a two- to four-fold higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems, but may also cause:
A complete medical history and physical exam can usually identify any serious conditions that may be causing the pain. During the exam, a health care provider will ask about the onset, site, and severity of the pain; duration of symptoms and any limitations in movement; and history of previous episodes or any health conditions that might be related to the pain. Along with a thorough back examination, neurologic tests are conducted to determine the cause of pain and appropriate treatment. The cause of chronic lower back pain is often difficult to determine even after a thorough examination.

The material breathes and you will not be hot on your body having perspiration to deal with. The memory foam interior will not go flat maintaining its shape for years. Align your spine, increase blood circulation and those pinched nerves that happen when lower lumbar discs compress. The cushion contours to your back shape and has an adjustable strap to fasten securely to your work chair or home chairs.
The low back supports the weight of the upper body and provides mobility for everyday motions such as bending and twisting. Muscles in the low back are responsible for flexing and rotating the hips while walking, as well as supporting the spinal column. Nerves in the low back supply sensation and power the muscles in the pelvis, legs, and feet.
Discography may be used when other diagnostic procedures fail to identify the cause pain. This procedure involves the injection of a contrast dye into a spinal disc thought to be causing low back pain. The fluid’s pressure in the disc will reproduce the person’s symptoms if the disc is the cause. The dye helps to show the damaged areas on CT scans taken following the injection. Discography may provide useful information in cases where people are considering lumbar surgery or when their pain has not responded to conventional treatments.
There are several muscles in the low back that assist with rotation, flexibility and strength. These muscles are susceptible to injury, especially while lifting heavy objects, or lifting while twisting. A low back muscle strain can be extremely painful but will usually heal within a few days or weeks.

The fact is, statistics show that most acute LBP begins to improve after 2 to 5 days and typically resolves itself in less than 1 month with non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) and (tolerable) activities.
Acute pain. This type of pain typically comes on suddenly and lasts for a few days or weeks, and is considered a normal response of the body to injury or tissue damage. The pain gradually subsides as the body heals.

An updated overview of clinical guidelines for the management of non-specific low back pain in primary care. European Spine Journal. 19 (12): 2075–94. doi:10.1007/s00586-010-1502-y. PMC 2997201 . In most episodes of low back pain, a specific underlying cause is not identified or even looked for, with the pain believed to be due to mechanical problems such as muscle or joint strain. If the pain does not go away with conservative treatment or if it is accompanied by red flags such as unexplained weight loss, fever, or significant problems with feeling or movement, further testing may be needed to look for a serious underlying problem. In most cases, imaging tools such as X-ray computed tomography are not useful and carry their own risks. Despite this, the use of imaging in low back pain has increased. Some low back pain is caused by damaged intervertebral discs, and the straight leg raise test is useful to identify this cause. In those with chronic pain, the pain processing system may malfunction, causing large amounts of pain in response to non-serious events.
This is a great support for anyone that works a desk job, but the Fellowes Professional Series Back Support only comes in at number 4 on our list because it’s not as transportable, easy to clean or affordable as other the other products on our list.
Radiculopathy is a condition caused by compression, inflammation and/or injury to a spinal nerve root. Pressure on the nerve root results in pain, numbness, or a tingling sensation that travels or radiates to other areas of the body that are served by that nerve. Radiculopathy may occur when spinal stenosis or a herniated or ruptured disc compresses the nerve root.
This can cause an inability to plantar flex the foot. This means you would be unable to stand on your toes or bring your foot downward. This occurs when the first sacral nerve is compressed or injured.
November 13, 2017 • As a result of the opioid epidemic, doctors are being urged to turn to other medications to treat chronic pain. That can be a challenge for people who have used opioid painkillers for years.
95 percent of back pain cases (such as muscle spasms or a dull ache in the lower back) are what experts call non-specific. That means that the exact cause is usually elusive and cannot be attributable to an identifiable condition (such as infection, tumor, arthritis, or inflammation, which are specific cases, and the minority). With non-specific low back pain (LBP) being so common and so elusive, it has become a big business with Americans spending at least $50 billion each year on potential treatment and prevention strategies.
Bone scans are used to detect and monitor infection, fracture, or disorders in the bone. A small amount of radioactive material is injected into the bloodstream and will collect in the bones, particularly in areas with some abnormality. Scanner-generated images can be used to identify specific areas of irregular bone metabolism or abnormal blood flow, as well as to measure levels of joint disease.

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people self-treat and seek medical care. It will affect approximately three in four adults during their lifetime. When we speak about “back pain” we mean pain that originates in the spine anywhere between the upper and lower back.
Most reputable spine surgeons will discourage people from surgery when they don’t think it will be helpful, but “You do see some crazy ways that people are treated by high level clinics,”says Hartigan. They neglect to offer people an option to get better, she asserts, which, in her practice, would involve physical rehabilitation and systemically progressive resistance exercises.
Lumbar back braces are designed to support the lower back and are indicted for many common back conditions. From back strains, post-op laminectomy, spinal stenosis and bulging discs, The Brace Shop has the right lumbar back brace for your orthopedic condition.
Chiropractic manipulation combined with other treatments, such as heat applications and massage, has been found to offer short- to medium-term relief for lower back pain and disability. Critics say, however, that the the forceful thrusts that chiropractors apply to the spine push the vertebral joint beyond its natural range of motion, and the World Health Organization says the modality is counter-indicated for several conditions (PDF).
Pain in different parts of the lower back could be the result of different factors. Hernia, irritable bowel syndrome, muscle strains, kidney diseases, injuries, improper posture and sciatica or nerve problems can result in lower right side back pain. Lower right side back pain causes difficulty in carrying out simple everyday chores and can become a serious health issue if it is ignored. Lower left back pain causes include muscle problems, herniated discs, wear and tear related to aging and lifting heavy objects.
