You can even use the cushion while traveling for added comfort during long flights or train rides. While the straps are an added convenience, the cushion itself will stay in place even if it’s not attached to anything.

Carol Hartigan, M.D., medical director of the Spine Center and the Spine Rehabilitation Program at New England Baptist Hospital, tells Quartz that she agrees with most of Ramin’s critiques, though she finds the author extreme in her opinions—for example, by saying that a person should never have back surgery. Still, Hartigan says, “She did an outstanding job of researching. She had an eye for looking for flaws in the ‘industry,” and she interviewed the highest level players. She should be commended.”

The vast majority of low back pain is mechanical in nature. In many cases, low back pain is associated with spondylosis, a term that refers to the general degeneration of the spine associated with normal wear and tear that occurs in the joints, discs, and bones of the spine as people get older. Some examples of mechanical causes of low back pain include:

This study did not include female participants as it has been shown that the female sitting posture is different from that of males [4]. While it would be interesting to study the effect of the lumbar support pillow on female participants, controlling for gender effects helped reduce the complexity of the analysis and the need for a much larger sample size. Moreover, the foundations of the chair were constrained, lowering arm rests and fixing the base to prevent rolling, to limit alternate strategies for changing comfort other than postural shifts with respect to the seat pan. Finally, while shorter term (30 minutes) static postural environments are reportedly adequate to determine comfort levels [22], the results may not generalize to longer seated exposure.

Electromagnetic sensors (Polhemus Liberty® system, Colchester, Vermont) were placed in the midline over the spinous processes at the junctions of the neck and upper back (T1), mid and lower back (T12), centre of the lower back (L3), and over the spinal base at the sacrum (S2). The spinal configuration was represented as a series of linkages connected by nodes that allowed for bending in the sagittal plane at the landmark pivots (Figures 2 and and3).3). The thoracic spine was treated as a single segment, rigid body, while the lumbar spine was modelled as a two segment linkage. The sensors were sampled at 240 Hz which allowed for the continuous and automatic monitoring of landmark positions and orientations in space. This system has an accuracy of 0.15° RMS. Difference in orientation between the thoracic link and the upper lumbar link were used as a surrogate for the thoracolumbar angle at T12 while the upper lumbar and lower lumbar links at L3 served to estimate the lumbar lordosis angle.

A 2001 study in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery showed that MRI scans were not predictive of the development or duration of LBP and that individuals with the longest duration of low-back pain did not have the greatest degree of anatomical abnormality.

Chronic back pain is defined as pain that persists for 12 weeks or longer, even after an initial injury or underlying cause of acute low back pain has been treated. About 20 percent of people affected by acute low back pain develop chronic low back pain with persistent symptoms at one year. In some cases, treatment successfully relieves chronic low back pain, but in other cases pain persists despite medical and surgical treatment.

Most experts agree that prolonged bed rest is associated with a longer recovery period. Further, people on bed rest are more likely to develop depression, blood clots in the leg, and decreased muscle tone. Very few experts recommend more than a 48-hour period of decreased activity or bed rest. In other words, get up and get moving to the extent you can.

As children, we often overheard our grandparents complain of back aches and back pain, and so we tend to associate back pain with old age. However, back pain isn’t necessarily a sign of aging and it can afflict just about anyone because of the various possible causes of back pain. You may need to use more than one treatment method for back pain and this will depend almost entirely on the cause of the pain and the nature of the injury. Back pain could refer to any kind of pain that afflicts any area of the back, including the lower, upper, or middle back. Though lower back pain is a lot more prevalent, there are some people who tend to suffer from upper back pain or middle back pain on a regular basis.

Even if you’re not currently experiencing back pain, having back support can help prevent back pain from occurring when used in anticipation of strenuous activity. Certain back supports can help ensure safe lifting in jobs like construction or moving so each motion is ergonomic and healthy. Keep your back in tip-top shape by using a back brace or other form of back support to take the stress off of it.

Exercise appears to be useful for preventing low back pain.[46] Exercise is also probably effective in preventing recurrences in those with pain that has lasted more than six weeks.[1][47] Medium-firm mattresses are more beneficial for chronic pain than firm mattresses.[48] There is little to no evidence that back belts are any more helpful in preventing low back pain than education about proper lifting techniques.[46][49] Shoe insoles do not help prevent low back pain.[46][50]

October 13, 2015 • Most people don’t need scans or surgery, but they do want relief from lower-back pain. Physical therapy isn’t a cure, a study finds, but it did help some people regain mobility more quickly.

The lumbar (or lower back) region is made up of five vertebrae (L1–L5), sometimes including the sacrum. In between these vertebrae are fibrocartilaginous discs, which act as cushions, preventing the vertebrae from rubbing together while at the same time protecting the spinal cord. Nerves come from and go to the spinal cord through specific openings between the vertebrae, providing the skin with sensations and messages to muscles. Stability of the spine is provided by the ligaments and muscles of the back and abdomen. Small joints called facet joints limit and direct the motion of the spine.[30]

Chiropractors recommend lumbar support cushions to reduce lower lumbar back pain that can have pain radiating down your known as sciatica. The lower back 5 vertebrae take on the most load of your upper body.

A lumbar support is easy to use. You simply place it or tie to your chair or seating area, and regardless of the style of lumbar support you use, using it is as simple as sitting down. A good lumbar support will function by doing 3 main things: Reducing bending, supporting and strengthening the spine, and enforcing good posture. A lumbar support reduces bending of the spine by restricting lower back movement when you are sitting down.

Skeletal muscle relaxers may also be used.[26] Their short term use has been shown to be effective in the relief of acute back pain.[36] However, the evidence of this effect has been disputed, and these medications do have negative side-effects.[34]

Many automobiles also have lumbar support in the seats. This feature is activated by a button which is usually located with the other seat controls. It allows the driver and passengers to inflate the lumbar section of the car seats to the amount of support preferred. It feels almost like using a lumbar support cushion, though this type of support is built right into the car.

The Tri-Tachment system allows you to adjust and secure the support in the exact position that’s right for you. This eliminates the need to constantly readjust the support every time you get in and out of the chair. Just clip the straps in place and it will stay put.

Made with non-flattening therapeutic, odorless memory foam, the lumbar cushion by RelaxBack includes an adjustable strap you can use to secure the cushion to your office chair. This keeps the cushion in the perfect position to give your back the support it needs. The velour cover is removable and easily machine washable to ensure cleanliness of the cushion. The cushion measures 14.6 x 3.6 x 13.5 inches and has a side handle for comfortably transporting the cushion around the office or to and from home.

Fitness level: Back pain is more common among people who are not physically fit. Weak back and abdominal muscles may not properly support the spine. “Weekend warriors”—people who go out and exercise a lot after being inactive all week—are more likely to suffer painful back injuries than people who make moderate physical activity a daily habit. Studies show that low-impact aerobic exercise is beneficial for the maintaining the integrity of intervertebral discs.
