I won the Autumn Giveaway of a great seat cushion for people with lower back problems. I was, at first, slightly skeptical of what a seat cushion could do for someone with a bad back if you’re in a secretary chair all day tapping away at a keyboard. Happily, I was wrong and it actually helps more than I ever imagined. It keeps my lower back and hips square and, being gel filled and not just soft and squishy, it is comfortable for long-term sitting. It makes sure your posture is right and so it gets rid of most of the pressure on your lumbar region.

For back pain that is so severe that you need prescription painkillers, be sure to follow the usage guidelines. These medicines may have more unwanted side effects in the long run. The National Safety Council reports that people who treat back pain patients with opioid medications are more likely to have back surgery.

The cushion’s biggest advantage is that it is considerably thicker than Everlasting Comfort’s product and features a wider base. The added thickness makes it more supportive for larger chairs with deep seats and poor lumbar support while the wider base lets it fit more snugly.

Muscles are the usual root of lumbar back pain. It can be from muscle strain, not working your muscles correctly and a number of other reasons that only a medical professional can tell you. Do you lift correctly? Do you lift things that are too heavy not using your leg muscles? Do you bend and stay bent for long times? Did you pull your back muscles?

Back pain is common, with about nine out of ten adults experiencing it at some point in their life, and five out of ten working adults having it every year.[3] Some estimate up to 95% of Americans will experience back pain at some point in their lifetime.[2] It is the most common cause of chronic pain, and is a major contributor of missed work and disability.[2] However, it is rare for back pain to be permanently disabling. In most cases of herniated disks and stenosis, rest, injections or surgery have similar general pain resolution outcomes on average after one year. In the United States, acute low back pain is the fifth most common reason for physician visits and causes 40% of missed days off work.[4] Additionally, it is the single leading cause of disability worldwide.[5]

I recently went on a coast to coast, 6,000 mile tour, and decided to try an experiment: I avoided sitting as much as I could. For example, in one room, I placed the mini fridge on the desk to make a modified standing desk. In the other room, I used a waste paper basket on another desk. By doing this, I was able to reduce my 12 to 14 hours of daily sitting to just under an hour.

For most patients, treatment is about helping them manage the pain until it passes. Doctors have over the years prescribed bed rest, pills and, in extreme cases, surgery. Altogether these treatments exact a high cost. The U.S. spends more on lower back and neck pain than almost any other health condition, excepting diabetes and heart disease—topping $87 billion in 2013, according to an analysis of national health records conducted last year.
