That’s easy—use them anywhere you need pain relief when sitting or lying down. Put on your bed when reading or watching TV. Put them in the car or truck. They are an added dimension when used in an office chair. They will help you to relax and remove pain when you are on a sofa or sitting in your recliner, airplane seat or even wheelchair. Those in wheelchairs also will benefit from lumbar support pillows or cushions.

Back pain is pain in any region of the back. It is divided into neck pain (cervical), middle back pain (thoracic), lower back pain (lumbar) or coccydynia (tailbone or sacral pain) based on the segment affected. The lumbar area is the most common area for pain, as it supports most of the weight in the upper body. Episodes of back pain may be acute, sub-acute, or chronic depending on the duration. The pain may be characterized as a dull ache, shooting or piercing pain, or a burning sensation. Discomfort can radiate into the arms and hands as well as the legs or feet, and may include numbness, or weakness in the legs and arms.
Workers who experience acute low back pain as a result of a work injury may be asked by their employers to have x-rays. As in other cases, testing is not indicated unless red flags are present. An employer’s concern about legal liability is not a medical indication and should not be used to justify medical testing when it is not indicated. There should be no legal reason for encouraging people to have tests which a health care provider determines are not indicated.

Size and weight: choose a cushion that suits the dimensions of your back. Shorter people would require thicker cushions in general while heavier people should go with firmer designs that are less likely to compress over time.
MRIs are not without problems. Bulging of the discs is noted on up to 40% of MRIs performed on people without back pain. Other studies have shown that MRIs fail to diagnose up to 20% of ruptured discs that are found during surgery.
