What does that mean for you – especially if your back hurts? It means that just because a certain practitioner claims a certain cause is your problem, and they have the perfect treatment, their cause may not be the real cause. Back pain is a symptom. Common causes of back pain involve disease or injury to the muscles, bones, and/or nerves of the spine. Pain arising from abnormalities of organs within the abdomen, pelvis, or chest may also be felt in the back. This is called referred pain. Massage therapy may give short-term pain relief, but not functional improvement, for those with acute lower back pain.[30] It may also give short-term pain relief and functional improvement for those with long-term (chronic) and sub-acute lower pack pain, but this benefit does not appear to be sustained after 6 months of treatment.[30] There does not appear to be any serious adverse effects associated with massage.[30]
