The road to understanding what may be causing your pain can seem overwhelming when you aren’t sure where to look. We want to help you take the next step. Read on to learn about back pain conditions and treatment options.
Age: The first attack of low back pain typically occurs between the ages of 30 and 50, and back pain becomes more common with advancing age. As people grow older, loss of bone strength from osteoporosis can lead to fractures, and at the same time, muscle elasticity and tone decrease. The intervertebral discs begin to lose fluid and flexibility with age, which decreases their ability to cushion the vertebrae. The risk of spinal stenosis also increases with age.
Because many different conditions may cause back pain, a thorough medical history will be performed as part of the examination. Some of the questions you are asked may not seem pertinent to you but are very important to your doctor in determining the source of your pain.
Sciatica is a form of radiculopathy caused by compression of the sciatic nerve, the large nerve that travels through the buttocks and extends down the back of the leg. This compression causes shock-like or burning low back pain combined with pain through the buttocks and down one leg, occasionally reaching the foot. In the most extreme cases, when the nerve is pinched between the disc and the adjacent bone, the symptoms may involve not only pain, but numbness and muscle weakness in the leg because of interrupted nerve signaling. The condition may also be caused by a tumor or cyst that presses on the sciatic nerve or its roots.
While past authors have advocated the quantitative assessment of comfort through shifting , the current study employed a novel method of determining CoP shift and its potential to represent the full range relationship of comfort to posture remains to be explored.
Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis that causes chronic inflammation of the spine. The tendency to develop ankylosing spondylitis is genetically inherited. Treatment incorporates medications, physical therapy, and exercise.
I believe that the number of future back pain sufferers can be cut down if more effort was put into the prevention and education of people. Often, we start taking care of our health when we start losing it.

A good lumbar support is quite simple. It should be comfortable, and beneficial to the health of your back. However, as simple as these requirements are, the back itself is a complicated place. There are a wide variety of reasons for people to seek lumbar support, and these reasons stem from complications deriving from lumbar related back problems.
Most back pain is relieved within a few days to a couple of weeks with simple treatment. When back pain persists beyond 2 to 4 weeks — which is chronic, persistent back pain — further medical evaluation is required. This evaluation focuses on a careful assessment of the patient’s medical history and a thorough physical examination to identify, if possible, a precise cause of the pain. In rare cases, cancer or an infection is found. More commonly, the pain is related to the spinal joints, discs, or supporting muscles of the back.
The usefulness of many red flags are poorly supported by evidence. The most useful for detecting a fracture are: older age, corticosteroid use, and significant trauma especially if it results in skin markings. The best determinant of the presence of cancer is a history of the same.

Consider this: Back pain is most commonly blamed on things like herniated (slipped) lumbar discs, poor postural alignment, lack of core strength, tight hamstrings or hip flexors, and being overweight. And it’s these factors that many popular treatment and prevention strategies claim to improve (or cure).
