OVERWEIGHT: While it seems intuitive that LBP and excess weight could be related, a 2007 paper in the Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development says the science cannot determine whether they are in fact directly related, under what circumstances they are related, how they become related, the strength of relationship (if one does in fact exist), and the impact of a change in one condition on the other. In other words, we don’t know for sure.

Exercise appears to be useful for preventing low back pain.[46] Exercise is also probably effective in preventing recurrences in those with pain that has lasted more than six weeks.[1][47] Medium-firm mattresses are more beneficial for chronic pain than firm mattresses.[48] There is little to no evidence that back belts are any more helpful in preventing low back pain than education about proper lifting techniques.[46][49] Shoe insoles do not help prevent low back pain.[46][50]

The usefulness of many red flags are poorly supported by evidence.[39] The most useful for detecting a fracture are: older age, corticosteroid use, and significant trauma especially if it results in skin markings.[39] The best determinant of the presence of cancer is a history of the same.[39]

Similar to previous studies investigating healthy individuals [15,16], the results of this study indicated that a lumbar support pad was better at increasing (or preserving) the natural lumbar lordosis in sitting in both healthy individuals and patients with LBP. However, the reverse was seen in the thoracolumbar spine, whereby the neutral curvature was increased with the support pad compared to the standard chair. This is not surprising given the closed-chain nature of the seated task. Changes in one region of the spine may be compensated for by changes in other regions along the linked kinetic chain [28]. Furthermore, use of the lumbar pillow often did not allow participants to make contact with the upper part of the back rest, which may account for the thoracolumbar change. Measures of comfort were not negatively affected, suggesting that any compensations that were employed may have been acceptable.

The neoprene belts found in pharmacies or sporting goods stores, on the other hand, are more common. If you regularly do heavy lifting on the job, your employer may encourage you to wear one. While they may help prevent back pain, they won’t help you heal. If you have back issues already, talk to your doctor or physical therapist about the best model for your needs.

There are a number of ways to classify low back pain with no consensus that any one method is best.[5] There are three general types of low back pain by cause: mechanical back pain (including nonspecific musculoskeletal strains, herniated discs, compressed nerve roots, degenerative discs or joint disease, and broken vertebra), non-mechanical back pain (tumors, inflammatory conditions such as spondyloarthritis, and infections), and referred pain from internal organs (gallbladder disease, kidney stones, kidney infections, and aortic aneurysm, among others).[5] Mechanical or musculoskeletal problems underlie most cases (around 90% or more),[5][34] and of those, most (around 75%) do not have a specific cause identified, but are thought to be due to muscle strain or injury to ligaments.[5][34] Rarely, complaints of low back pain result from systemic or psychological problems, such as fibromyalgia and somatoform disorders.[34]

Getting a massage is another simple strategy I recommend to help ease not only your back pain (and other types of pain), but anxiety as well. Massage offers real health benefits that are being recognized even by conventional hospitals, making it a standard therapy for surgery patients. Massage releases endorphins that help induce relaxation, relieve pain, and reduce levels of stress chemicals, such as cortisol and noradrenaline. It also reverses the damaging effects of stress by slowing your heart rate, respiration, and metabolism and lowering raised blood pressure.

Dr.McGill recommends “strengthening the core muscles responsible for protecting the spine instead of stretching our hamstrings. This does not mean doing hundreds of repetitions of crunches or other spine-bending exercises since those with back issues tend to have more motion in their backs and less motion and load in their hips.”

Most of us spend a good part of our day sitting down, which may be more harmful than you realize. You can minimize the impact by maintaining good posture. Correct posture in a chair means having all the bones in your spine lined up neatly, like a stack of perfectly aligned blocks. You should keep your feet flat on the floor and your computer keyboard within easy reach so you’re not leaning forward or slumping. This is part of proper office ergonomics.

Regular activity and gentle stretching exercises is encouraged in uncomplicated back pain, and is associated with better long-term outcomes.[8] Physical therapy to strengthen the muscles in the abdomen and around the spine may also be recommended.[28]  These exercises are associated with better patient satisfaction, although it has not been shown to provide functional improvement.[8] However, one study found that exercise is effective for chronic back pain, but not for acute pain. If used, they should be performed under supervision of a licensed health professional.[29]

Not all treatments work for all conditions or for all individuals with the same condition, and many find that they need to try several treatment options to determine what works best for them. The present stage of the condition (acute or chronic) is also a determining factor in the choice of treatment. Only a minority of people with back pain (most estimates are 1% – 10%) require surgery.[citation needed]

Low back pain (LBP) is a common disorder involving the muscles, nerves, and bones of the back.[4] Pain can vary from a dull constant ache to a sudden sharp feeling.[4] Low back pain may be classified by duration as acute (pain lasting less than 6 weeks), sub-chronic (6 to 12 weeks), or chronic (more than 12 weeks).[3] The condition may be further classified by the underlying cause as either mechanical, non-mechanical, or referred pain.[5] The symptoms of low back pain usually improve within a few weeks from the time they start, with 40-90% of people completely better by six weeks.[2]

The Duro-Med Relax-a-Back Lumbar Cushion includes a wooden insert that adds extra support for those who need a little firmness in their back cushion. Designed to relieve tension and keep the spine in proper alignment, the pillow cushion is made of highly resilient foam that doesn’t lose its shape with continued use. The cushion includes an elastic strap with a buckle that can be used to hold the cushion in place on its chair, ensuring it doesn’t slide around as you reposition yourself. The cover is conveniently removable and washable. Just unzip the cover and wash it on gentle cycle in cool water to clean the cover and maintain its durability. And, if you want to match your pillow to office décor, you can choose from gray, black, burgundy and navy.

Elastic back supports can be folded and stored in a locker or drawer at work and put on whenever you’re required to do strenuous physical tasks. Invest in a wrist guard for added protection when moving heavy items.

Increasing general physical activity has been recommended, but no clear relationship to pain or disability has been found when used for the treatment of an acute episode of pain.[47][53] For acute pain, low- to moderate-quality evidence supports walking.[54] Treatment according to McKenzie method is somewhat effective for recurrent acute low back pain, but its benefit in the short term does not appear significant.[1] There is tentative evidence to support the use of heat therapy for acute and sub-chronic low back pain[55] but little evidence for the use of either heat or cold therapy in chronic pain.[56] Weak evidence suggests that back belts might decrease the number of missed workdays, but there is nothing to suggest that they will help with the pain.[49] Ultrasound and shock wave therapies do not appear effective and therefore are not recommended.[57][58] Lumbar traction lacks effectiveness as an intervention for radicular low back pain.[59]
