When sitting in an office chair, a good lumbar back support should be flush against the small of the back. Many portable lumbar back supports are shaped specifically so that one end should be positioned up and the other down. When placed correctly, a lumbar back support should provide the following benefits:

I purchased and now use a TENS unit for back pain. By using the TENS, I have stopped going to the chiropractor and my lower back pain is gone. I also use a massage cushion in my chair when using my computer and you can see some of the best ones here. I did not finish the digging; I had a kid in the neighborhood do that for me. I did, however, being pain free, plant my seeds, tomato plants, and bell peppers. One thing about this type of gardening is that there are no weeds and no bending over! By the way, I designed this and built it myself with the men in the neighborhood watching me. Girls can do anything!

The lumbar discs are at the lower end of the spine numbered L1, through L5. Some complaints and ailments are interconnected. Joints that are not stable can be the forerunner of disc degeneration that can put pressure on nerves.

While the fabric and straps are both great features, what really makes this support stand out in the crowd is its unique shape. Unlike other supports, the PosturePro is not constructed with molded foam. This lightweight support features a curved shape that resembles the back of an ergonomic office chair.

Doctors also explored surgical options, only to find that these physical fixes were thwarted by the complexity of the lower back. The best candidates for surgery are patients whose pain derives from a specific, identifiable source—such as a tumor or an infection. But 90 percent of cases are untraceable. Insults to the muscles, ligaments, joints, nerves or bones—or some combination thereof—can all cause lower back pain. And the specific sensations are unique to the individual; the same nerve damage in two people can elicit entirely different symptoms. In short, it is hard to know where the pain comes from or how to intervene surgically to make it stop.

Imaging tests are not warranted in most cases. Under certain circumstances, however, imaging may be ordered to rule out specific causes of pain, including tumors and spinal stenosis. Imaging and other types of tests include:

The cushion contours to your lower back area so that your body’s natural curve is maintained. The materials used are the best quality 100% high-density memory foam, and mesh cover that is removable for cleaning. Sciatica, compressed lower discs, herniated discs and other back pain will be supported using this pillow.

Use of a lumbar support pillow that allows space for the posterior pelvic bulk significantly decreased lumbar flattening during sitting in healthy individuals and patients with LBP. However, thoracolumbar curvature was increased. The difference in angular change was small and further study is required to determine clinical relevance over the long term. Furthermore, an objective measure of comfort was improved with the pillow but subjective reports on comfort were not significantly affected. Future studies should investigate the long term clinical benefit of using a lumbar pillow in males and females with a higher intensity of LBP.

The lumbar support pillows on our list all include memory foam, which allows the pillow to conform to the natural curvature of your back and continue to provide the support you need. You’ll find a range of lumbar support pillows to make the time spent in your office chair much more comfortable.

Arthritis most commonly affects joints such as the knees and fingers. However, arthritis can affect any joint in the body, including the small joints of the spine. Arthritis of the spine can cause back pain with movement.

The presence of certain signs, termed red flags, indicate the need for further testing to look for more serious underlying problems, which may require immediate or specific treatment.[5][36] The presence of a red flag does not mean that there is a significant problem. It is only suggestive,[37][38] and most people with red flags have no serious underlying problem.[3][1] If no red flags are present, performing diagnostic imaging or laboratory testing in the first four weeks after the start of the symptoms has not been shown to be useful.[5]

Bulging or ruptured disks. Disks act as cushions between the bones (vertebrae) in your spine. The soft material inside a disk can bulge or rupture and press on a nerve. However, you can have a bulging or ruptured disk without back pain. Disk disease is often found incidentally when you undergo spine X-rays for some other reason.

Skeletal muscle relaxers may also be used.[26] Their short term use has been shown to be effective in the relief of acute back pain.[36] However, the evidence of this effect has been disputed, and these medications do have negative side-effects.[34]

The diagnosis of low back pain involves a review of the history of the illness and underlying medical conditions as well as a physical examination. It is essential that a complete story of the back pain be reviewed including injury history, aggravating and alleviating conditions, associated symptoms (fever, numbness, tingling, incontinence, etc.), as well as the duration and progression of symptoms. Aside from routine abdomen and extremity evaluations, rectal and pelvic examinations may eventually be required as well. Further tests for diagnosis of low back pain can be required including blood and urine tests, plain film X-ray tests, CAT scanning, MRI scanning, bone scanning, and tests of the nerves such as electromyograms (EMG) and nerve conduction velocities (NCV).

The gluteus medius is sandwiched between the glute maximus and minimus and lies in and around the hip area. The role of the muscle is to abduct your hip or lift your leg out to the side in either standing or side lying and to keep your pelvis level whenever you take a step. Prolonged sitting during the day as well as an unequal weight distribution when standing are two of the most common reasons for this muscle to get weak and imbalanced.

Yoga is a practice that involves specific poses, movements, and breathing exercises. Some forms of yoga may help strengthen the back muscles and improve posture. Care must be taken that exercises do not make back pain worse.
